The German Renewable Energy Federation (BEE) has presented a study involving possible costs in the event that Germany abandons the use of nuclear energy.

The German report has tried to calculate how much it would cost to insure nuclear power plants.

While the nuclear power plant operators in Germany collect the profits, consumers and the government would be required to foot the bill in the case of loss. The study shows how expensive nuclear power would have to become if instances of damage were adequately insured.

Thousands of e-mails are already being sent to HSBC and BNP Paribas international board members asking them to withdraw their finance and support from the Jaitapur nuclear project. Building what will be the world's biggest nuclear power plant in a coastal zone that is prone to earthquakes seems like an inconceivable idea after the horror of Fukushima.

Five shipping containers detained in Rotterdam after testing positive for radiation probably left Japan before a screening program started, the Asian nation’s transport ministry said.

Japanese authorities officially began scanning cargo boxes for radiation on April 28 because of concerns about leaks from a nuclear plant crippled by a March 11 earthquake and tsunami, Koji Takahashi, director of the transport ministry’s ports and harbors bureau, said today by phone. The journey time to Europe is about 30 days.
